Hello, my name is Garry Sims.
I have been a resident of the Upper Blue Mountains for around 40 years and as such, have seen many changes in our community. While there have been many positive changes, in my role as a senior police officer and a community member, I have seen issues in areas such as mental health and social isolation.
This has led me to take on a role as a Community Ambassador with R U OK?, the suicide intervention charity and I deliver to locations around NSW. Locally, I wanted to do something extra and with the assistance of Shannon Nevin, established Walk N Talk For Life Blue Mountains.
This group meets regularly and attracts men and women, young and old and people with disabilities. Our aim is to provide a safe, supportive environment for people to engage in conversation and establish positive relationships to improve mental and physical health. On our events, each walker receives a free distinctive t shirt to make them feel part of a team and are provided with a BBQ lunch.

As our numbers grow, this cost increases but we remain committed to keeping this as a no cost community event so as not to lose anyone. This is where the Katoomba Branch of Bendigo Bank stepped in. They provided generous sponsorship to guarantee we can continue to offer a free community service, for which I personally am very grateful. I am aware of other activities Bendigo Bank provides to the community so Walk N Talk For Life Blue Mountains is very grateful of the support.
